Çeşitli Türk sanatçılarının oluşturduğu “Patterns İstanbul”, İstanbul’un kaotik semti Taksim’i ele alarak, bölgenin farklı haritalarından hareketle tasarım ürünleri yaratmayi hedefliyor.

Gece, DJ Hugo Chavez a.k.a. Ahmedinejad ve DJ Dr. Egal (Slave Music) performansları ile Dogzstar’daki partiyle devam edecek.

Bu gecede siz değerli basın mensuplarını aramızda görmekten mutluluk duyacağız.

08 December 2006 --Cezayir- Istanbul

Friday report:
from Taksim to the map and to the project.
Reaching our first pattern’s concept <<2>>

1. Presentation of the day work
The main activities of the day were:
¨ Discussion of exploration’s experience in little group
o The main aim was to reach 4 or 5 key words or topics related to specific place in the map
o Starting from the mind and topographic map of Thursday and using it as a tool again: now as the memory of the group
¨ First e non definitive drawn of a pattern

2. A preamble
Our main aim was to let people share the journey and to work out all the information acquired until that moment.
We had some important phases during the week:
¨ Oran guided visit
¨ a detailed history of Taksim: the journey was mainly focused on historical and social changes in the urbanistic structure of Takism square and its surroundings
¨ personal perspective on Taksim
¨ At the same time we have asked to the people o understand and to clarify to themselves and to the group which was their personal perspective on Taksim
¨ We propose an “emotional journey” through this area, starting from some pictures and the reflections related to.

Moreover, in the previous weeks:
¨ the group had already began his personal reflection about the themes and the single personal project
¨ using the 5 legs format, and thinking about some social aspects (religion, minority, and so on)

In order to avoid the danger of an overload information, it was necessary to stop for a moment and to let the group process the information, perceptions, suggestions amount.

3. The little groups work
Three groups of 2 and of 4 people worked together for 30/40 minutes in order to fix and write their favourites topics and their place in the map.
They worked as a project team, and they began to share not only the ideas but also the opportunity to reach together the final product.
We asked to write the main topics and place on some post it card.
In the following discussion, we shared the main outcomes.
We told about:
¨ Project concepts
¨ Methods
¨ Approach to the work

4. A list of project concept: a landscape of pattern?
We work drawing some patterns and exposing some project related to the first lines and points fixed down.
We speak about the projects with each person and what comes out is a little “list” of beginning patterns.
Here you are just a synthesis and a first selection. I beg your pardon if there is some misunderstanding or simplification. Please feel free to correct and to add or modify as you want. The projects are in progress of course.
¨ Sound map:
o the wave of the sound in circle
o a line with highest and lowest point
The project is structuring, but it firstly would have a research area and a recording phase.
Clothes resonant and signs of the sound on clothes: these are two different concepts for the final product.
The aim of the project is to let the people reflect on two main aspects:
o personal feelings passing trough the space
o personal responsibility and its first step: awareness of the “surrounding” of each person through the sound’s sensibility
¨ Taksim floor
The different textures like a melange are the centre of the concept idea. The aim is to let people reflect on where they put their foot every day.
¨ where begins or finishes Taksim: the Taksim borders
A research on what people think about Taksim’s borders.
One phases questioning people about borders of Taksim, the other following some specific sign in the city.
At the end, but also during the research, the project will be a multisided vision of how Taksim is perceived and about the meaning of border in Taksim area.
¨ political and social movement in Taksim
It was a leit motiv in our round table discussion: how many people use Taksim for political or social or personal reason. The main points of this perspective, was firstly written down on the map (the work is in progress of course).
¨ Taksim as a black hole
A perception of the empty and the fulfilled place in Taksim area. A site that is not really touching, but that is readable also following some perceptions, and reflections.
¨ Taksim as a patchwork
Many different social classes, many different behaviours, many different kind of people. In the map, the area of different part of textile materials, will construct the patterns of a clothes. Done as a patchwork.
5. how to go on
¨ fix the ideas
o projects/contents of the projects/main aims of the projects
o people/role for each project and for its realization
¨ go on working on patterns practically:
o which kind of materials do you need
o time for each phase
o space/tailor workshop/etc
¨ how to present the project
o when
o how
o etc
¨ the people leg
o some project will be done through the people contribute (people questioned or interviewed, etc)
o some project starts from a personal reflection or perception e should reach people in a second phase: maybe the last event is one step of the long process of relationship with people (that means also to wake up people, or to give some questions or to work on the awareness of some conditions, etc)

REPORT MEETING -- 23rd November 2006

REPORT MEETING -- HUMAN SETTLEMENT 23rd November 2006

Key-points:

- Issues of the last meeting
1. Is it possible to “integrate” the project -patterns Istanbul- in the “citizen structure”?
Which strategy we should adopt to let understand the people the theoretical topics of the project?
Group suggestions:
- formalize some questions/interviews to the people living in the area we chose; work with the local tailors during the last part of the workshop (dress realization)
-communication through the t-shirts design
- a publication between the short term and the long term of the project (an example could be a city guide with insert of patterns sheet of the realised models)
- public discussions
suggestions are still developing

2. Approach of Kohran – how do you see Istanbul city?
- the problems of the suburb and minority groups of are not faced
- running into the culture of the stage and consume: great architecture great investment, great structure—but luck of infrastructure, no culture and sensibility of the constructions no real project behind
- importance of the culture on the “responsible development” of the city
- the project pattern Istanbul should focus its investigation on the social and cultural minorities (ex. Roman in Sulukule)
Reflections of the group:
- the value of the religion in the social and cultural development/decline (religion creates culture, form the culture, but closed in small groups of affiliation it also create isolation and isolated culture)
- what does it meant assumes the word “safety” to Istanbul; which are the visible changes relate to this issue
suggestions are still developing
3. maps, pattern, people, places, textiles 5 tools of application for the development of the project (the five legs to run)
3- Results of the meeting:
we are still focusing the field of investigation. According to the group present to the meeting the emerged suggestions are open to further reflections by email or through blog
------------------------------------------
we certainly forget some point sorry for that>>>>>>> Thank you again for your participation in the meeting; we are waiting for you tomorrow Thursday 28 November at 10.00 am at the Human Settlement – Nuruzia Sokak 23 (Beyoglu Is Merkese) tel 0555 598 4901

REPORT MEETING WITH HUMAN SETTLEMENT 21st November 2006

Key-points:

1- Schedule of time:
21th November – 9th December 2006: pre-phases of the group of work at Human Settlement’s office
2th December – 10th December 2006: intensive week of work of the group with the support of Love Difference (Cittadellarte-Fondazione Pistoletto)
22nd December 2006: final event-presentation (to be defined)

2- Issues of the last meeting

How we can create a pattern starting from the observation of a topographic map/or thematic map
Meaning of creation of a legend based on the identification and investigation of the topics chosen
Start of investigation of the territory where the phenomenon of the own topics is mostly felt
Redraw the map according to the new legend. The lines that ideally cut the territory will underline a shape that will be used for the construction of the pattern.
Availability in terms of dates and times for every participant (happy breakfast or happy hour?)
Role of Cittadellarte-Fondazione Pistoletto e Love Difference during the workshop (2th/ 10th December) they will mediate the group helping to investigate the phases related to the exploration of the thematic and elaboration of the map, and to the systematization of the result obtained

3- Results of the meeting:
As was understood from everybody, we absolutely need to define the place of investigation and the topic we like to approach (of course can be different from person to person or from group to group), for this reason we asked for the next meeting if Khorhan could make a short introduction on the thematic of the city for him important.
It will be from my point of view essential to define the availability in terms of dates and times for every participant to next period and to the 2th/ 10th December workshops

patterns torino // 2004-2005

“Patterns Torino” (Nicola-Fornello Gallery, Turin), is the logical continuation of “patterns kiosk” at the Polish-German border: here also, a tailor manufactures clothes designed on portions of the Turin territory marked by profound social characteristics: the Mirafiori, Vanchiglia, Stadio delle Alpi and San Salvario borough
In the first room, the pattern-territory is enlarged and painted on the walls whilst piles of fabric patiently wait, steeped, to take form. The table and sewing machine, covered with bobbins and threads, frills and cuttings, in the second room, testify to the tailor’s weekly work. Dressmaker’s dummies wear the first completed models and small collages on the walls reproduce the whole project.

The paper patterns, offered to the public, may be freely collected and used.

pattern kiosk // summer 2004

In “pattern kiosk”, summer 2004, the clothes designed reproduce areas and buildings from the map of the city of Kuestrin (Poland). They were made by two tailors, who during the course of the exhibition “Dialog Loci”, in Kuestrin, worked in a small kiosk inside the frontier bazaar – trans-frontier market. Visitors could choose the patterns and fabrics they preferred for their clothes (for free).

patterns istanbul

The project “Patterns” is based on the idea of overlapping and matching the body – the boundary as to the external world – to territory. By conceptually positioning the body over the territory, it is possible to make a
body-territory mapping, through clothing.

Both, nature and politics delimit/cut territories, move frontiers. But behind the moving of lines, the power-games and strategies, extremely deep and harsh signs are hidden. Cutting and redesigning territories, as for example the Oder-Neisse line between Poland and Germany or those borough artificially/specifically designed for certain social classes – Mirafiori in Turin or Scampia in Naples – is related to political as well as social, logics and necessities; there are marks left in history and memory, on our skins, in our bodies.
